Know before you go
Twin almond-shaped lakes above Kashmir's Aru valley, linked by a crossing of the Tarsar pass at about 4,000 m. Against Kashmir Great Lakes it is shorter, quieter and a shade gentler, with camps pitched beside the water at Tarsar and Sundersar.
July to September is the season — afternoon cloud and cold clear nights are the pattern. The meadows en route are working pastures, dotted with Gujjar shepherd huts.
